Vaulted Roof & Glazed Extension
We provided a local steel frame for a large bespoke extension and refurbishment to an existing dwelling. The Gables, Washington
Project Overview
This project relates to a large bespoke extension and refurbishment to an existing dwelling. The proposed extension is extensively glazed, meaning we had to satisfy lateral stability requirements.
We provided a local steel frame to suit the glazed aperture as well as to support the proposed vaulted roof structure throughout.
There is a glazed link provided between the existing building and new extension. It was imperative for us to work closely with the Architect and glazing manufacturer on this project, to ensure the detailing was accurate and the desired aesthetics were achieved.

Project Challenges
The key challenges for this project included achieving lateral stability within a highly glazed extension, supporting the vaulted roof structure without compromising the architectural design, and coordinating the detailing with both the architect and glazing manufacturer to ensure the accuracy and quality of the finished result.
The Solution
We designed a steel frame that not only supported the extensive glazing but also stabilised the structure.
The steel ridge beams and frame elements were carefully integrated to allow the vaulted ceilings to span without excessive deflection.
Close collaboration with the architect and glazing manufacturer was central to the success of the project.
This ensured that both the technical requirements and the desired aesthetics were delivered.
The Outcome
The extension and refurbishment resulted in a striking and functional living space that balances transparency with strength.
The glazed link between old and new provided a seamless connection, while the vaulted ceilings created a sense of height and openness.
