Residential Conversion & Structural Design
Briar Close, Darlington, Newcastle
Project Overview
This project involved the structural design and conversion of a detached bungalow into a modern pool room and gymnasium. A glazed link was introduced to connect the new leisure spaces to the main dwelling.
The success of the project depended on precise structural detailing, particularly within the glazed section, where visual lightness had to be balanced with essential lateral stability.
Residential Conversion and Structural Design for Bungalow into a Swimming Pool Room & Gymnasium
Architect, Glazing Manufacturer, Swimming Pool Designer, The Home Engineers
Seamless Integration of Light, Structure and Leisure Space.
The Issue
The homeowner wanted to repurpose a standalone bungalow into a high-end leisure suite comprising a swimming pool and gym. A key requirement was to connect the new space to the main home through a visually lightweight glazed link.
This created several structural challenges. The link needed to resist lateral loads without compromising its transparency or elegance.
Additionally, integrating a swimming pool into an existing structure brought complexity in terms of structural loading, waterproofing and material compatibility.
The project required tight coordination between multiple disciplines to ensure the structural design complemented the architecture and specialist systems.
The Solution
We provided the full structural design for the conversion and link. A localised steel frame was introduced to provide the necessary lateral stability for the glazed section.
This frame was developed in close consultation with the glazing manufacturer to ensure detailing aligned with the desired finish and avoided unnecessary visual intrusion.
At the same time, we worked alongside the swimming pool designer to ensure the slab and surrounding elements could support water loads and meet performance standards.
Every element was designed to support clean transitions, reduced material impact and long-term durability.
The Outcome
The completed leisure extension delivers a unified and luxurious experience. The glazed link connects the main dwelling and the converted pool and gym areas with minimal visual interruption.
Structural solutions are discreet and fully integrated, allowing light to flow freely through the space.
Internally, the leisure facilities feel open and expansive, while the pool structure and finishes remain robust and futureproof.
The final result reflects thoughtful engineering and seamless collaboration between professionals to meet both aesthetic ambitions and technical demands.
