Bespoke
Self-Build Dwelling
Great Park, (Build 3)

We provided the structural design for this bespoke self-build dwelling in Great Park, Gosforth.

Project Overview

We provided the structural design for this bespoke self-build dwelling in Great Park, Gosforth. The property is a load bearing masonry building that comprises of facing brickwork and glazing. Structural steel beams were designed for over the structural openings and to achieve the large open plan living space to the rear of the property.

The property also benefits from feature apex glazing at the front of the property meaning we had to design a steel frame to satisfy lateral stability requirements and form the apertures for the glazing. Roof structure was designed using a construction comprising of steel ridge beams and laid-in timber roof rafters to achieve the desired vaulted ceilings throughout.

Project Challenges

The client’s design aspirations centred on achieving both large open plan spaces and striking glazed features, which introduced significant structural demands.

Masonry construction alone could not accommodate the wide spans or the feature apex glazing, meaning additional steel design was required.

Furthermore, the vaulted roof structure demanded a carefully engineered solution that combined both steel and timber elements.

The Solution

We designed structural steel beams to support new openings and create open plan living areas at the rear of the property.

A bespoke steel frame was engineered to accommodate the apex glazing, providing lateral stability and forming the apertures for the glazing system.

For the roof, we developed a structural solution that combined steel ridge beams with laid-in timber rafters, enabling vaulted ceilings to be achieved without compromising structural integrity.

These solutions allowed the architectural ambitions for openness and light to be fully realised.

The Outcome

The completed self-build successfully combined the robustness of loadbearing masonry with the flexibility of steel and timber design.

The result is a home that features open plan interiors, dramatic glazed elevations, and vaulted ceilings, all supported by carefully detailed structural solutions.
