Grade II Listed House Extension & Refurbishment
Bouchon Bistrot is a well-established restaurant in the heart of Hexham, Northumberland
Project Overview
Bouchon Bistrot is a well-established restaurant in the heart of Hexham, Northumberland. Due to its popularity, the venue required additional usable space and modernisation of the existing Grade II listed building.
We provided the structural design for a three-storey rear extension and refurbishment of the listed property. The rear extension was delivered as a braced steel frame, creating a new kitchen and two additional floors of restaurant space, along with an external terrace.

Project Challenges
The project presented two major challenges. The installation of a braced steel frame within a confined working site. Preserving the historical fabric of the Grade II listed building while carrying out structural alterations and repairs.
The steel frame comprised hot rolled steel columns and beams, supporting cold rolled joists with a Lewis deck and screed finish. Given the ground conditions, piled foundations were required.
The Solution
We developed a lightweight, braced steel frame to form the new rear extension, carefully phased to allow safe installation within restricted site conditions.
Piled foundations were designed to accommodate the ground conditions and provide a stable base for the three-storey structure.
As part of the listed building refurbishment, we designed new structural steelwork above proposed openings to support existing load-bearing elements and specified remedial works to address areas of structural defect.
The Outcome
The result was a sympathetic extension and refurbishment that provided Bouchon Bistrot with a modernised kitchen, additional restaurant floors, and an external terrace — all while retaining the charm of the Grade II listed property. The scheme successfully balanced modern expansion with heritage preservation.
