Commercial ConversionStarbucks Drive-Thru
The Home Engineers were commissioned to provide the structural design to a new Starbucks drive-thru in Blaydon, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Project Overview
The Home Engineers were commissioned to provide the structural design to enable the removal of a central part of an existing steel portal frame to achieve a new Starbucks drive-thru in Blaydon, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
It was essential that our engineering design ensured that the remainder of the frames were stable following removal of the central section.

Project Challenges
The key challenge was achieving the removal of the central section of the portal frame without compromising the stability of the remaining structure.
The design had to ensure that the adapted frame could safely support both vertical and lateral loads in its new configuration.
The Solution
We carried out a detailed assessment of the existing portal frame and developed a strengthening strategy to allow for the central removal.
Structural steelwork was designed to redistribute forces and ensure the frame’s stability while accommodating the new drive-thru layout.
Close coordination with Wardman Brown Architects enabled the structural modifications to be integrated smoothly into the wider commercial design.
The Outcome
The project successfully transformed a disused steel portal frame unit into a Starbucks drive-thru, extending the building’s life and creating a new commercial asset for the area.
Our engineering solutions ensured that the adapted frame remained robust, safe, and fit for its new use.
