Farm, St. Breward
The Home Engineers (SW) were commissioned to undertake a structural design for a side extension at a farm in St. Breward.
Project Overview
The Home Engineers (SW) were commissioned to undertake a structural design for a side extension at a farm in St. Breward.
Our services included for the underpinning of existing walls where required, new foundations and ground bearing slab design, masonry walls, lintels and structural steelwork to form the large rooflight opening and to provide support to the flat roof.

Project Challenges
The project required delivering a new build structure that sat within the grounds of a historic Grade II listed building.
This meant the structural design needed to meet modern performance standards while being sympathetic to its heritage context.
The steel frame also had to be carefully designed to provide stability and integrate with masonry infill panels.
The Solution
We developed a structural design that addressed the needs of both the existing building and the new extension.
Underpinning was specified where required to stabilise existing walls, while new foundations and a ground bearing slab provided a solid base for the extension.
Masonry walls and lintels were carefully detailed, and structural steelwork was incorporated to form the large rooflight opening and support the flat roof, balancing light and strength in the design.
The Outcome
The completed side extension added valuable space to the property, with the large rooflight creating a bright and modern interior.
Our structural solutions ensured the extension was delivered safely, integrated seamlessly with the existing building, and provided long-term durability.
